CHAPTER

THIRTEEN

Once in her apartment, Maggie flipped open Celeste’s Yellow Witch spellbook and began hungrily skimming the pages.

Edgar paced back and forth on the table, now and then lifting his wings and settling them back down again. “I don’t think this is a good idea.”

Maggie looked up from her reading. “Oh, come on. Stop looking so worried. It’s not so bad. If I try a spell and it works, that might just help me to wrap my mind around witchcraft in general. You know… get a feel for what it’s all about. What’s the harm in that?” She turned her attention back to the page at hand, which was filled top to bottom with her grandmother’s cursive script.

“She said so herself. The Yellow arts can only bring problems. One after another. That doesn’t sound very good.”

“Well, that’s her take on it but it doesn’t have to be mine. Here we go… a spell for strengthening family ties. Looks simple enough.” She flicked her gaze to her watch. “If I start now I can still be in bed by ten.”

Jumping up, she bustled over to the cupboard above her stove, where she kept spices, and started gathering supplies. “It’s nice that all the ingredients are common household items, mostly spices. Except the spell does call for one thing that I won’t find in this cupboard.” She carried an armful of spice jars to the table. “A feather.”

“Oh, no you don’t.” He stepped back. “I need all my feathers for flying.”

“Every single one? Come on. Eddie… how about just one of these little fluffy ones on your chest, there?.”

He tucked his head down. “All of them. I need all of them.”

“Hey now. Is that a way to treat your witch? This is a two-way street, you know. I help you; you help me.” She consulted the list of ingredients and saw that she’d forgotten cinnamon. As she returned to the cupboard she said, “I’ll let you think about it.”

As she started measuring various ingredients into a glass mason jar, she pondered the result she desired.

It would be so nice to spend some good quality time with Charlotte. We could go for a walk in the woods across the street, she thought. I could take her down to the outlet stores and we could shop, and then go out to dinner. Oh! And I’ve been wanting to visit those hotsprings to the north that I’ve been hearing about.

She whistled as she filled a Mason jar with the ingredients she’d gathered, occasionally checking the page as she worked.

“There, I think I got everything. I’m pretty good at this.” She dusted flecks of dried spearmint off of her hands. “All except that one final ingredient…”

Edgar flapped his wings nervously.

She marched over to him. “Ready? One is all I’m asking for.”

He lifted his head, exposing his sloping neck and round chest. “Is it going to hurt?” He squeezed his eyes shut and looked away.

Maggie pinched one shiny black feather between her fingers and yanked.

“Eep!”

“Oh, don’t be a baby.
